Experience the raw power of New Zealand's geothermal landscape at Craters of the Moon. Just a short drive north of Taupo, this captivating attraction invites you on an adventure through a surreal world of colourful craters and hissing steam vents. Wander along the boardwalks and witness nature's fiery artistry up close. We have unique flora and fauna including native birds and lizards. It's a truly unforgettable journey into the heart of a vibrant, ever-changing volcanic wonderland.
Our well-maintained tracks are easy to follow and suitable for most people, the main walkway will take you on a 45-minute leisurely stroll through the valley and the optional 15-minute upper walkway will take you up the steps for fantastic views from the lookout.
Enjoy at your own pacetop for photos, don't worry we have the educational signs for you too!
Loop Track - Suitable for pushchairs. Wheelchairs are permitted but some areas of the path are more difficult to navigate than others. The path is mostly boardwalk but it is recommended that you have a person to assist in areas where there is a gravel path.
Upper Walkway - A moderate walk with multiple steps (totally worth it), not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Our Loudest Steam Vent - 90 Approx Stairs up to the viewing platform which gets you right in the action!

Sorry you didn't enjoy your visit, I suggest you try us in the cooler months as there is a lot more steam.
Was a very long walk with a 4 and 6 year old, wouldnt recommend young children. they got bored very quickly as there was not much to see. beautiful scenery but more for adults

Worth a visit
Super freundliches Personal und ein kleiner bequemer Spaziergang durch das geothermale Gelände. Den Souvenirshop mochte ich persönlich auch sehr. Lediglich gibt es keine Möglichkeit für Reisende ohne Auto zum Park zu kommen außer zu Fuß (was doch relativ weit ist) oder per Taxi. Das ist jedoch kein Minuspunkt für craters of the moon sondern für Taupo.
